Lake Powell Water Level: Reading the Number

The lake is quoted in feet above sea level, not feet deep, and the figure that matters to your trip is rarely the one in the headline. Here is how to read it.

Lake Powell is measured in feet above sea level. That is the first thing to get straight, because almost every confused conversation about this lake starts with somebody reading "3,560 feet" as a depth and concluding the water is deeper than the Grand Canyon.

It is an elevation — the height of the lake surface above sea level, the same way a mountain summit is quoted. The lake itself is a few hundred feet deep near the dam and shallows out as you go upstream. When a news story says the lake "dropped forty feet," it means the surface elevation fell forty feet, and that number tells you a great deal about your trip if you know what to compare it against.

The four numbers worth memorising

Full pool: 3,700 feet. This is the design maximum, the elevation the reservoir was built to hold. At full pool Lake Powell backs up something close to 190 miles from Glen Canyon Dam toward Hite, with roughly 1,900 miles of shoreline once you count every side canyon. It has been at or very near full pool only a handful of times since it finished filling in 1980. Treat 3,700 as the ceiling, not the norm.

Minimum power pool: 3,490 feet. Below this elevation, water cannot reliably pass through the penstocks that drive Glen Canyon Dam's hydroelectric turbines. It is a threshold about electricity rather than about boating, but it is the one that generates the alarming headlines, and it is why the reservoir's management has an interest in keeping the surface well above it.

Dead pool: 3,370 feet. The elevation below which water can no longer be released downstream through the dam's normal outlets at all. This is the genuine floor of the system. It has never been approached, and a great deal of policy exists to make sure it is not.

Whatever it is this week. The only number that governs your trip. The gap between full pool and the current surface is what tells you which ramps reach water, how far the walk from a courtesy dock is, and whether the side canyon you have seen in photographs is a navigable inlet or a dry wash.

Why the number moves

Two rhythms are working at once, and confusing them is the usual mistake.

Within a year, the lake follows snow. The Colorado River's flow into Lake Powell is dominated by snowmelt from the Rocky Mountains, so the reservoir typically rises through late spring and early summer as the runoff arrives, then declines through late summer, autumn and winter as releases continue and inflow slows. A lake that is rising in June and falling in October is behaving completely normally. Booking in April on a level you read in July is not comparing like with like.

Across years, the lake follows the balance between how much water the Colorado River basin produces and how much is released downstream to Lake Mead under the compacts and interim guidelines that govern the river. Two decades of drier-than-average conditions in the basin drove a long decline that took the reservoir to record lows; a single exceptional snowpack can pull it back up by tens of feet in one season. The trend and the season are different questions, and a marina's operating status usually depends on the season.

What each stretch of elevation changes for a visitor

Launch ramps. A concrete ramp reaches only so far down the bank. As the surface drops, a ramp is first extended, then reduced to a rough or "primitive" ramp of gravel and matting, then closed. This is the single most common way a falling lake ruins a plan: the boat is booked, the trailer is loaded, and the ramp you were going to use is out of the water. Ramps at the upper, shallower end of the lake go first.

Marinas. The marinas float, so they move. A drop can mean a marina is relocated within its bay, that its access road and parking are extended down the bank, or that fuel is no longer sold at a particular dock. Whether there is fuel available up-lake from where you launch is a question with real consequences for a houseboat.

Side canyons. This is where the level makes the biggest difference to what you actually see. A side canyon at high water is a navigable slot you can idle a boat into with vertical walls a few feet off each gunwale. The same canyon fifty feet lower is a bay that ends in a beach and a hike. Cathedral in the Desert, in the Escalante arm, is the standard illustration: depending on the elevation, it is a flooded alcove you boat into, a dry chamber you walk into, or something between the two. Neither version is worse. They are different trips, and it is worth knowing which one you have booked.

Rainbow Bridge. The courtesy dock in Bridge Canyon sits at the end of a walk to the monument. That walk gets longer as the lake falls, and at low elevations it is a genuine hike in exposed desert rather than a stroll from the boat. If somebody in your party cannot walk a mile or more in heat, this is the detail to check.

Hazards. A falling lake exposes rock that was navigable water the previous season, and drowned features become near-surface ones. Buoys and markers are moved to reflect it, but charts and memory both go stale. This is a real argument for a current navigation map rather than the one in the boat from last year.

How to actually check it

Do not take the number from a guide, including this one. Any figure printed here would be wrong by the time you read it, and this site is built as static pages — it cannot tell you what the lake is doing today.

Read it live instead:

  • The Bureau of Reclamation publishes Lake Powell's elevation, storage and inflow, updated daily, as the operating agency for Glen Canyon Dam.
  • The National Park Service's Glen Canyon National Recreation Area pages are the authority on what the elevation means operationally — which ramps are open, which are primitive, which marinas have moved, and what is closed this season.
  • The park's concessioners for whether a particular dock is selling fuel and whether a rental fleet is operating from where you plan to launch.

The order matters. The elevation is a fact; the ramp status is a decision somebody made in response to it, and only the Park Service publishes the second one.

A sensible way to use all this

Check the elevation when you first plan the trip, to set expectations about side canyons and about which end of the lake is in good shape. Check ramp and marina status again two to three weeks out, when you can still change a booking. Check it once more in the week before you travel, because ramp status is the thing that changes at short notice.

And book the trip you can have at the level the lake is actually at, rather than the one you saw in a photograph taken at full pool in 1999.
